Nab Yourself a Nargle!

This October (2018) half term our theme has been everything ‘Harry Potter’, one of our favourite crafts has been our ‘Nargle Jars’ – read on to see how we made them!

You will need:

…. PVA glue, a jar (we used plastic jars), paper (black paper works best), glitter, a tea light (we used battery operated tea lights) …… and a bit of imagination!

The first task is to draw your Nargle – we drew several before we had one we were happy with – you will need to bear in mind the size of your jar, the Nargle needs to fit inside it.

Once you have an image you are happy with, you need to cut it out. We decided to draw ours on black paper, with a blue/black gel pen… cutting out can be fiddly so our adults did this part!

Next, you need to coat the inside of your jar with PVA glue –

…then place your Nargle inside. We found we needed to ‘poke down’ the limbs, and add a coat of glue on the top to help our Nargle stick and mould itself to the inside of the jar.

Next add your chosen colour of glitter to your jar, pop on the lid and carefully shake – gently enough that the glitter coats all of the glue, but not vigorously enough that your Nargle falls off inside the jar!

Once glittered, remove the lid, shake out the excess glitter, and then leave the jar open so that the glue has a chance to dry. During our drying time we discovered that the gel pen we had used, had ‘bled’ onto the wet glue – this created an effect that makes it look like the Nargle is flitting about inside the jar trying to escape!

When the glue has dried, the jar is ready to add your tea light – we chose battery operated ones for safety reasons. Switch on the light, place it in the jar, and pop the lid on to stop your Nargle from flying away!

We think they look amazing!
